Master of Science in Telecommunications

The Master of Science degree program in Telecommunications is designed to prepare individuals for careers in the telecommunications and computer communications and networks industry. Depending on the student's background and interests, the program provides the necessary education for those involved with hardware and software providers, service providers, large user organizations, and government regulators.

PREREQUISITES

Students with a Bachelor's degree will be required to have a minimum prerequisite of one course in each of three areas: calculus, statistics, and computer programming. Those students with an Engineering or Computer Science degree can proceed with more advanced technical courses. For admission to candidacy the student must follow the general Regulations for the Master's Degree stated in an earlier section of this Graduate Bulletin.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

All students must take three three-credit courses in the technology of telecommunications. They should also take one course in Public Policy and one in Quantitative Business Methods. The specific courses depend on the student's background and are determined by the Advisory Committee. All students must take the courses in Telecommunications Project Planning and in Telecommunications Industry Development. Both thesis and non-thesis (project) tracks are available. These require 30 and 33 credits respectively in a program approved by the Student's Advisory Committee.

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS

To satisfy this requirement all students make a colloquium-like presentation of the thesis or project to a general audience, which includes the student’s Committee and Graduate School representative, and also take an oral examination on basic Telecommunications topics, on topics from courses taken by the student, and on the thesis or project area. Thesis-track students present their thesis. Non-thesis-track (project) students take a directed independent study course as part of their 33 credit requirement. Their presented material relates to the required core courses.
